Gorgeous small hotels are our first choice when searching for special places to stay in Portugal. When we combine that with ‘off the beaten path’ we know for sure that we will create new and very special memories.

Every place we feature in our main collection has been tried and tested by us personally. Below is a mix between the gorgeous small hotels in Portugal that are off the beaten path we already know and love, and those that are on our radar. These boutique stays are all perfect for a weekend escape, romantic getaway, solo retreat, or even a longer and relaxed holiday.

Pensão Agrícola

Pensão Agrícola – Eastern Algarve

Pensão Agrícola is a stunning six-bedroom rural boutique hotel in the Algarve that we instantly fell deeply, truly in love with. This little-known spot nestles between the historic town of Tavira and Cacela Velha, a picturesque clifftop fishing village. On the shady terrace, guests can enjoy a delicious, generous breakfast, or take other light meals by the plunge pool which is heated in the winter. Fill your lungs with the wonderful aromas that the south of Portugal has to offer – you’re surrounded by the scent of almond, carob, fig, orange and olive trees. Trust us – you’ll be in for a treat.

Surrounded by 40 acres of pine, cork, carob and olive trees, plus a biological garden, Companhia das Culturas is a boutique hotel in the Algarve offering a truly relaxing experience. The owners, Eglantina and Francisco, are proud of the produce of the region and their hotel is a reflection of that. It’s evolved through seven family generations and it took 10 years (it opened in 2008) to create what is today “Companhia das Culturas”.

Casa do Rio Wine Hotel

Casa do Rio Wine Hotel – Douro

A boutique wine hotel in the Douro with beautiful vineyards, stylish scandi decor and a dreamy infinity pool. Casa do Rio is one of the best boutique hotels in Portugal, and the sister hotel of Quinta do Vallado, one of the oldest and most famous estates in the Douro Valley. It’s located deep in the Douro wine region, more specifically, in Vila Nova de Foz Coa, slightly farther than most of the hotels in the Douro region so we recommend that you stay for at least two nights. It’s truly beautiful here.
