Azores Wine Company
Azores Wine Company is an one-of-a-kind winery offering architect-designed serviced apartments, on the stunningly scenic Pico Island.
The interior design was a collaborative effort between Ana Trancoso and Judith Martin.
The decoration offers a mix of bespoke-made furniture crafted by local artisans and vintage furniture, mitigating the industrial feel of the building and adding comfort and warmth to the concrete structure.
We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast at Vermelho. Highlights included the array of Portuguese and French pastries that were brought to your table and the perfectly cooked a-la-carte eggs. Breakfast was delicious but also beautifully arranged, featuring tableware from Vida Dura.
Conceived and designed by local architecture firm SAMI, in conjunction with UK based firm DRHR, the overall idea was for the architecture to blend in with the landscape, resulting in a minimal visual impact.
Elisabeth Lincot's installation, Lagrima de Loros, graces an exterior hearth at Vermelho with glazed and colourful ceramic bird heads.

This winery pays homage to Azorean wine, capturing the tradition of old Pico wineries where people would drink, eat, and sleep. There’s a tasting room, a restaurant, plus five stunning apartments, including four studios and a two-bedroom apartment. Wine enthusiasts rejoice - the mini-bars have been transformed into climate-controlled mini-wineries for you to savour rare wines in your own room.
The building boasts a unique location, with views of the volcano and the sea, and is surrounded by "currais" made of volcanic rocks that shield the vineyards from sea breezes and strong winds. These currais contribute to the distinctive landscape of Pico, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
The minimalist interiors are inspired by the almost lunar-like landscape, featuring bare concrete walls and ceilings plus floor-to-ceiling windows.
