We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast at Vermelho. Highlights included the array of Portuguese and French pastries that were brought to your table and the perfectly cooked a-la-carte eggs. Breakfast was delicious but also beautifully arranged, featuring tableware from Vida Dura.

Casa do Rio is one of the best boutique hotels in Portugal, and the sister hotel of Quinta do Vallado, one of the oldest and most famous estates in the Douro Valley.
This eight-suite boutique hotel is surrounded by organic vineyards and wildflowers. It's located deep in the Douro wine region, specifically in Vila Nova de Foz Coa. Casa do Rio is an impeccably designed wine hotel with Scandinavian-style rooms and decor.
On the terrace in a mesmerising setting, guests can taste delicious wines from the hotel's estates.
Casa do Rio is slightly farther than most of the hotels in the Douro region, so we recommend that you stay for at least two nights. It's truly beautiful here.
Awesomeness
Fill your soul with the wonderful views that the Douro region has to offer.
One of the most beautiful infinity pools we’ve ever seen.
Eight suites only - it never feels crowded.
Each room has its own balcony and pod wood-burner.
Complimentary wine tasting, kayaks, paddle boards and bikes.
Bear in Mind
It's a two-hour drive from Porto but a very scenic trip. Access to the hotel is made through a 2 km dirt road – and if you're scared of heights, it can be a little scary.
Due to its elevated wooden structure, sound travels a little into the rooms. The two suites outside the main building are safer if you want absolute silence.
No children are allowed unless the property is hired exclusively.
No dinner is served on Sundays, but snacks are available.

Interview
A Conversation with João Ferreira about Casa do Rio Wine Hotel
“On the walls we have pictures of the Douro which were taken by my father in the seventies.”
– JOÃO FERREIRA, CO-OWNER
How did you come across this beautiful land?
We were searching for a place to plant new vineyards, and found this amazing place – it had both potential for producing great wines and natural beauty.
The project was designed by Francisco Vieira de Campos who also worked on your first hotel, Quinta do Vallado. Did you always know you wanted to work with the same architect?
No we didn’t. During the process we realised it made sense to make the new project with the same architect.
How do you describe the architecture and interior?
The architecture is modern but timeless, it’s well integrated in the landscape and ecologic. The interiors are clean, simple with a mix of furniture designed by the architect, as well as vintage Scandinavian furniture. On the walls we have pictures of the Douro which were taken by my father in the seventies.
How long did it take to get everything ready to open?
It took a year and half.
Can you tell us about the organic vineyard methods?
Traditional viticulture in the Douro valley is based on the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Here it was very important for us to preserve the nature. We use grapes that are not subject to the use of any chemicals, everything is organic.
We fell in love with the swimming pool, surrounded by vineyards with an amazing view over the river. How easy or difficult was it to design?
Actually we went through four design proposals for the swimming pool… it was a difficult process to get to the final solution but it’s been worth it. Both materials and colours were chosen to achieve a natural look, including the colour of the water.
What sets you apart from other hotels in the region?
There are very few other hotels in the region – but our concept is to take advantage of the quietness and beauty of the nature, to provide very good local gastronomy and high level of service.
What’s your favourite object in the hotel?
My favourite piece is the antique granite lagar (winepress) in front of the entrance. It belonged to an old house, in the medieval village of Marialva.
Casa do Rio is a hotel that invites you to relax and bask in the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds it.
Unwind by the stunning infinity pool or find a peaceful spot by one of the water tanks dotted around the property. Guests can also enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and biking amidst the picturesque scenery.
On cooler days, cosy up in the stylish living room, complete with a fireplace to keep you warm and a selection of books, magazines, and board games for your entertainment. And of course, no visit would be complete without trying the excellent wine from the hotel's sister estate, Quinta do Vallado.
If you feel like you need some kind of action you can visit Museu Coa (the region features some of the most important prehistoric rock-art sites in Portugal) or book a trip to Quinta da Ervamoira.
