Beautiful vineyards, stylish scando decor and a dreamy infinity pool.

Casa do Rio is the sister hotel of Quinta do Vallado, one of the oldest and most famous estates in the Douro Valley.

Opened in 2015, this 8 suite boutique hotel is surrounded by organic vineyards and wild flowers. It’s located deep in the Douro wine region, more specifically, in Vila Nova de Foz Coa. Casa do Rio is an impeccably designed wine hotel with Scandinavian style rooms and decor.

On the terrace in a mesmerising setting, guests can taste delicious wines from the hotel’s own estates.

This hotel is slightly farther than most of the hotels in the Douro region so we recommend that you stay for at least 2 nights. It’s truly beautiful here.

Awesomeness

Fill your soul with the wonderful views that the Douro region has to offer.

One of the most beautiful infinity pools we’ve ever seen.

Only 8 suites so it never feels crowded.

Each room has its own balcony and pod wood-burner.

Complimentary wine tasting, kayaks, paddle boards and bikes.

Bear in mind

It’s a 2h drive from Porto, but a very scenic trip. Access to the hotel is made through a 2km dirt road – and if you’re scared of heights it can be a little scary.

Due to its elevated wooden structure sound travels a little into the rooms. The 2 suites outside the main building are a safer choice if you want absolute silence.

No children are allowed unless the property is hired exclusively.

No dinner served on Sundays but snacks are available.

Local Action

Casa do Rio is one of those hotels made for simply enjoying its own beautiful surroundings.

Chill by the stunning pool or by one of the water tanks that are spread around the property. Kayaks, stand up paddle boards and bikes are all available for guests to use.

For those colder days the cosy and stylish living room features a fireplace (and so do the rooms), books, magazines and board games – all of which go exceptionally well with an excellent glass of wine from Quinta do Vallado.

If you feel like you need some kind of action you can visit Museu Coa (the region features some of the most important prehistoric rock-art sites in Portugal) or book a trip to Quinta da Ervamoira.

João Ferreira, co-owner

Quinta do Vallado, established in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous “Quintas” in the Douro Valley. It once belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to her descendants.

How did you come across this beautiful land?

We were searching for a place to plant new vineyards, and found this amazing place – it had both potential for producing great wines and natural beauty.

The project was designed by Francisco Vieira de Campos who also worked on your first hotel, Quinta do Vallado. Did you always know you wanted to work with the same architect?

No we didn’t. During the process we realised it made sense to make the new project with the same architect.

How do you describe the architecture and interior?

The architecture is modern but timeless, it’s well integrated in the landscape and ecologic.
The interiors are clean, simple with a mix of furniture designed by the architect, as well as vintage Scandinavian furniture. On the walls we have pictures of the Douro which were taken by my father in the seventies.

Favourite Hotel

One of João’s favourite hotels is the 11 Cadogan Gardens in London.

How long did it take to get everything ready to open

It took a year and half.

The vineyard practices organic viticulture. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Traditional viticulture in the Douro valley is based on the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Here it was very important for us to preserve the nature. We use grapes that were not subject to the use of any chemicals, everything is organic.

We fell in love with the swimming pool, surrounded by vineyards with an amazing view over the river. How easy or difficult was it to design?

Actually we went through 4 design proposals for the swimming pool… it was a difficult process to get to the final solution but it’s been worth it. Both materials and colours were chosen to achieve a natural look, including the colour of the water.

What sets your guests’ experience apart from other hotels in the region?

There are very few other hotels in the region – but our concept is to take advantage of the quietness and beauty of the nature, to provide very good local gastronomy and high level of service.

What’s your favourite object in the hotel and where did you find it?

My favourite piece is the antique granite lagar (winepress)in front of the entrance. It belonged to an old house, in the medieval village of Marialva.

What’s your favourite hotel (worldwide)?

Copacabana Palace in Rio and 11 Cadogan Gardens in London.

Where do you tend to go on holiday and which hotels do you stay in?

I enjoy going to my friend’s house in Aljezur (south west Portugal) or to a chalet in the French Alps.
